Built in the 16th century, this Cottage has long exuded character and charm. Over the past decade, careful planning and thoughtful modernisation have allowed it to evolve into a home that meets the demands of contemporary living while preserving its historic integrity. The challenge was to seamlessly blend the old with the new—a process that required time, dedication, and many discussions with planners.
Now, this family home has been transformed inside and out. Our goal was to marry tradition with modernity in a way that complements today’s lifestyle needs. This delicate balance has been achieved through sympathetic design choices.
The exterior has been carefully crafted to promote movement around the property, linking new terraces with soft sandstone paving and gravel. Retaining walls made from locally sourced red sandstone add to the natural aesthetic, while a pergola draped in wisteria and grapevines enhance the charm.
An outdoor entertaining area, complete with a barbecue space and swimming pool, has been designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The pool, in particular, required a minimalist approach, with planners emphasising the need for more greenery and less paving to maintain the natural beauty of the area.
To further enrich biodiversity, a new orchard has been planted, and a home apiary has been established within a dedicated wildflower zone. Additionally, an existing pond—now in need of urgent restoration—is undergoing redevelopment to restore its function, local wildlife habitat and beauty.
For this family, fusing the historic elements of the home with a sleek contemporary style has been a rewarding challenge. The result is a space that successfully marries old-world charm with modern comfort, ensuring that the home’s heritage remains intact while catering to the demands of today’s lifestyle.
